PLANE LINES

The contrail conspiracy, often referred to as the “chemtrail” theory, is a belief held by some that the condensation trails left behind by high-altitude aircraft are not simply water vapour but contain chemicals or biological agents deliberately released into the atmosphere. Contrails form naturally when hot exhaust from aircraft engines meets cold, humid air, creating ice crystals that appear as thin, white lines in the sky.

Proponents of the conspiracy claim that certain trails persist for unusually long periods or spread out into cloud-like formations, suggesting intentional spraying. Alleged motives include weather modification, population control, or undisclosed military experiments. Photographs of tanker aircraft, patents for aerosol delivery systems, and selective readings of atmospheric research are sometimes cited as evidence.

Scientists and aviation experts widely reject these claims, explaining that the variation in contrail appearance is due to atmospheric conditions such as humidity, wind, and temperature. Studies have found no credible evidence of harmful substances in contrails beyond typical aviation emissions.

Despite the lack of scientific support, the contrail conspiracy remains active online and in some activist circles, fuelled by mistrust of government, environmental concerns, and the visibility of aircraft activity in an era of heightened public awareness about climate and pollution.
