Folkestone Leas Lift Oral History Project
A new display at Folkestone’s historic Leas Lift is inviting passers-by to pause and explore personal memories of the town’s much-loved funicular, as part of the Folkestone Leas Lift Oral History Project.
Developed to capture and preserve stories from local people, the project records lived experiences of the lift and its place in everyday life. While restoration work continues, a series of selected highlights from these interviews is being shared publicly, with full recordings held in the Leas Lift digital archive.
The installations on the Upper Station hoarding features a QR code linking to one of these stories. Participants reflect on childhood outings, seaside traditions, changing landscapes, and the role the Leas Lift played as both a practical mode of transport and a special part of the Folkestone experience.
Their recollections offer an intimate glimpse into the social history of the town and the enduring affection held for the lift across generations.
Members of the public can access the featured interview by scanning the QR code displayed on the hoarding, where both audio and written transcripts are available.
